Boulogne-sur-Mer fish market: consume seasonally

The Ports of Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais became the "Port Boulogne Calais" in 2015.

And what if you went for a stroll around the Boulogne-sur-Mer fish market?

Near Port Boulogne Calais, discover the famous Boulogne-sur-Mer fish market on Quai Gambetta. Open all year round, the market's opening hours vary according to the arrival of the boats, the tide and on the fish landed that day.

On the programme? Not just the market, but also gastronomy, traditions and folklore in the heart of the town.

The fish stalls run by the fishermen's families will astound kids and grown-ups alike. You'll be able to discover the fish, shellfish and crustaceans caught just a few hours earlier!

So, are there many different varieties of fish at the Boulogne-sur-Mer fish markets? It all depends on the season and the catch of the day: spider crab, mackerel, scallop, sardine, crab, turbot, weever, sole, sea bream, gurnard, herring, flounder, plaice, Norway pout… a multitude of recipes offer themselves to you thanks to these exceptional fish, whether its for an everyday meal or a special occasion.

Fishermen committed to sustainable fishing and consumption

The Boulogne-sur-Mer fishermen are responsive to the idea of sustainable fishing and consumption of the produce of the sea. In this respect, Nausicaá and other major aquariums (Acquario di Genova and Aquarium Finisterrae La Coruña) have launched the European "Mr.Goodfish" programme. Its goal is to promote the sustainable consumption of fish and seafood. These three aquariums are part of the World Ocean Network. This association aims to raise our awareness of the major role played by the Oceans in our everyday lives and to inform the general public about the changing state of the oceans.

Mr.Goodfish also mobilises fishmongers, who hold a key position! They are the ones who make the link between the production and sale of the produce of the sea. It's up to the fishmongers to meet the expectations of the market and prepare the produce in line with that.

Consuming seasonal fish, it's possible!

You want to get involved in an ecoresponsible initiative and give your priority to seasonal fish? That's also Mr.Goodfish's mission: to raise the consumers' awareness regarding seasonal species. To find out more, do not hesitate to consult the calendar posted on this European programme's website.

Mr Goodfish, it's also at the restaurant! See the list of restaurants that have joined the programme : the guarantee that you'll get seasonal fish!

Nausicaá raises its visitors' awareness of sustainable consumption thanks to Mr.Goodfish. "Choosing the right fish, it's good for the sea, it's good for you", is one on the French National Sea Centre's initiatives. A Mr.Goodfish app helps you on a daily basis to find the species recommended for each season. But also, don't hesitate to ask the Boulogne fishermen's advice if you take a stroll around the Boulogne-sur-Mer fish market after your behind-the-scenes visit of the aquarium!
