Red Sea, Persian Gulf, East African coastline as far as Mozambique, Seychelles, Eastern Mediterranean (Lessepsian species).

Habitat:

Coral or rocky areas, sheltered muddy bays; depth of 4 to 70 m.

Size:

Up to 50 cm; average size: 20 cm.

Diet:

Sponges, sea squirts, shrimp, worms, seaweed; juveniles: amphipods and small invertebrates.
