Indo-Pacific: Red Sea, East Africa, Japan, New Caledonia, Great Barrier Reef, Tuamotu Islands; absent from the Marquesas Islands and Easter Island.

Habitat:

Rich coral reefs, clear lagoons, channels, outer slopes; depth 1 to 100 m.

Size:

Up to 40 cm; maturity around 25 cm.

Diet:

Sponges, tunicates, encrusting organisms; sometimes cleaner of large fish.

Longevity:

Up to 14 years old.
