Western Indo-Pacific: Philippines, eastern Indonesia and north-western Australia.

Habitat:

Between 1 and 10 metres on sandy and muddy reef bottoms, or sea grass beds.

Size:

Between 6 and 8 cm.

Diet:

Small benthic invertebrates.

Despite its brightly coloured coat, the colourful mandarin fish is very discreet.

It spends most of its time hidden under the coral and is only visible for a few moments when it searches the sand for food.
