Wissant, the jewel of the Opal Coast

Wissant Beach is one of the loveliest beaches on the Opal Coast.

Wissant Beach: one of the jewels of the Opal Coast

Bounded by Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez, it is stunningly beautiful, thanks not only to its fine sandy beach but also to its coastal scenery.

As you walk along Wissant Bay, you'll be able to appreciate the scenery all round you, contemplate the sea, the flobarts (traditional fishing boats) and the movement of the waves crashing on to the rocks.

However, you'll only be able to adventure out here at low tide. Owing to the coastal geomorphology, there's nowhere to walk at high tide. So check the tide tables before you go. This is an ideal site for walks. Wander through the dunes and along the clifftops and appreciate the beauty of this incredible landscape.

Setting out from Wissant and its beach, you can head for the Deux Caps. This walk is a delight and will allow you to make the most of the shoreline and the exceptional panoramic views. You'll also be able to take the time to admire the sea. And if you keep your eyes skinned you'll probably see some seals and lots of different birds. Incidentally, if you are interested in marine flora and fauna, you should make the most of your stay to pay a visit to the biggest aquarium in Europe, Nausicaá in Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Staying close to Wissant beach

A stay in Wissant is just as agreeable if you're on your own, with your partner or all the family. Regarding the accommodation, there are several possibilities with hotels, guest houses and Gîtes de France. It is really very easy to find somewhere to stay on the Opal Coast, even if there are a lot of you. Also, unlike many other beaches, pets are permitted on Wissant beach. You can therefore walk your four-legged friend on a lead.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Wissant. The local specialities are of course shellfish and fish. And, on this subject, there are some very good places to eat in this little coastal town. As for the weather, there may be some rainy days, but Wissant benefits from a microclimate that allows you to catch a glimpse nearly every day of the sun peeking through the clouds. This is also a very windy area, the waves can therefore be strong, which means you must be careful if you do any watersports here.

What to do during your stay in Wissant?

If you're passing through Wissant, take a walk through this charming little village and soak up the local life. A market is held every week on the main square where you'll be able to discover the local farmers and their specialities. There's no shortage of outdoor activities around here. There are lots of paddle-boarding enthusiasts in Wissant. So you'll be able to give this physical yet restful watersport a go. You'll paddle standing on your board, which will allow you to admire the beauty of the Opal Coast's scenery.

However, if you're a beginner, it's better go out when the sea's calm rather than choppy. After an effort, comes comfort! After your sports session, why not pay a visit to the Deux Caps artisan brewery, located on a particulalrly beautful site not far from Wissant. Another idea for a relaxing activity is fishing on foot from the beach, a favourite with tourists and locals alike. The most commonly found shellfish on the coast here are clams. But you'll be able find other species too. Ask at the tourist office about the best fishing spots.
