What is World Ocean Day?

World Ocean Day is a special day to celebrate the ocean, which falls on the 8th of June every year.

Nausicaá, as a founding member, and the partners of the World Ocean Network have been striving to make this day official since 2003, with the support of the Global Ocean Forum.

The initiative, which was launched in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, was formalised by a UN resolution in December 2008.

On this day of mobilisation and public outreach, activities and initiatives will be organised all around the world to urge sustainable management of marine resources and to highlight the extent to which the ocean is essential to life on Earth.

Today, this festive event mobilises thousands of organisations in 70 countries across 5 continents.

UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission is coordinating the official United Nations World Ocean Day Portal with the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.

Why should there be a World Ocean Day?

50% of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean!

Whether we live by the sea or further inland, the ocean has an impact on our lives. The ocean spans 70% of the planet, and is a source of life that harbours a vast biodiversity, with many species yet to be discovered.

It is a source of income for 40 million people worldwide. It provides 6.7% of all the protein consumed by human beings and contains mineral resources, as well as molecules that could become medicines.

Food, health, housing, employment, transport and leisure are just some of the services that the oceans provide to mankind, to which must be added their role in regulating the climate.

The value of marine resources has been estimated at 16,000 billion euros.

The ocean is key to our economy with millions of people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. It is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world and contains mineral resources, as well as molecules that could become medicines.

Food, health, housing, employment, transport and leisure are just some of the services that the oceans provide to mankind, to which must be added their role in regulating the climate.

The total value of the services produced by marine and coastal ecosystems is valued at USD$ 29.5 trillion per year.

World Ocean Day 2024: awaken new depths

This year, the aim of World Ocean Day is to "awaken new depths".

And by this formulation, we mean actions that will combine understanding, compassion, collaboration and commitment to ensure that our efforts go beyond the surface and plunge to new depths. In this way, we will change our relationship with the ocean, on which our lives depend, to make it deeper, and ensure that the knowledge we need to preserve its resources also deepens.

The 3rd edition of the Team for Ocean Festival organised by Nausicaá will take place on World Ocean Day and will offer activities and entertainment based on the theme of the benefits of the ocean.

To mark World Ocean Day on 8 June, Nausicaá is organising the Team For Ocean Festival.
